How to make a sphere or dome in Minecraft
A sphere is just a stack of circles that grow to the middle and shrink again. This free generator shows you the exact circle to build at every layer — slide through them, read the pattern, and stack your way to a clean sphere or dome.
If you can build a circle in Minecraft, you can build a sphere — because a sphere is nothing more than a stack of circles that grow toward the middle and shrink toward the top and bottom. The only hard part is knowing which circle to build at each layer, and that’s exactly what the generator below does for you.
Set the radius, then drag the layer slider to step through the sphere from bottom to top. Each layer shows the circle to build at that height. Toggle Solid for a filled planet or leave it hollow for a shell you can walk inside — the block counts update so you know what you’re in for.
How to build a sphere, step by step
- Pick a radius. A radius of
rmakes a sphere2r + 1blocks wide in every direction — radius 8 is 17 across. The bigger it is, the smoother it looks. - Start at a pole. The top and bottom layers are a single block. Place a marker there so your sphere stays centred.
- Build up, one circle per layer. Move the layer slider up a step, read the new (slightly larger) circle, and build it directly above the last — until you reach the widest circle at the middle.
- Mirror downward. The bottom half is a mirror of the top, so you can build one half and copy it, or work symmetrically from both poles toward the equator.
Building higher layers means floating blocks in mid-air, so keep some cheap scaffolding (dirt, cobble) handy and clear it once the shell holds itself together.
Domes are just the top half
A dome is the easier cousin: build the equator circle on the ground, then stack the shrinking upper layers only. It’s perfect for observatories, bases, and nether-proof roofs. In the generator, the layers at and above the middle are your dome — ignore the negative ones.
Solid vs hollow — which to build
- Hollow (default) gives you a ring on each layer — a thin shell that uses far fewer blocks and leaves the inside open. Best for builds you’ll live in or light up from within.
- Solid fills every layer completely. Best for small decorative spheres, planets, or anything you’ll carve back into later.
The block count in the header is your shopping list. A solid sphere climbs fast (roughly 4/3 × π × r³ blocks), so check the number before you commit to a radius 20 planet.
Tips for cleaner spheres
- Build the middle three layers first. The equator and the two layers beside it are usually the same width — nail that band and the sphere reads as round even before the caps go on.
- Count from the centre out. Like circles, spheres look best with odd diameters (a true centre block), which is what the radius-based generator produces.
- Grab the printable circle guide. Every layer is a circle, so the printable Pixel Circle Guide works as a lookup sheet for the individual rings while you build.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a sphere in Minecraft?
A sphere is a stack of circles whose radius grows to the middle and shrinks again. Pick a radius, then for each horizontal layer build the circle sized for that height — a single block at the poles, the full width at the equator. Stacking those layers gives a clean sphere; the generator on this page shows the exact circle for every layer.
How do you make a dome in Minecraft?
A dome is the top half of a sphere. Build the equator circle first, then stack shrinking circles above it up to a single block at the top. Skip the bottom half. The layer generator here works the same way — just build layers 0 and up.
What is the difference between a solid and a hollow sphere?
A solid sphere fills every layer as a complete disk — good for planets and decoration. A hollow sphere builds only a ring on each layer, leaving the inside empty so you can hollow it out or walk inside. The generator toggles between the two, and the block count updates so you know how much material each needs.
How many blocks does a Minecraft sphere need?
It depends on the radius and whether it is solid or hollow. A solid sphere of radius r uses roughly 4/3 × π × r³ blocks; a hollow one is far fewer. The generator counts the exact total for you as you change the radius, so you can gather materials before you start.
Can I make a sphere without mods or commands?
Yes. Every sphere and dome in survival Minecraft is built by hand, layer by layer, from a circle chart. No mods, no WorldEdit, no commands — just the per-layer patterns and some scaffolding to reach the higher rings.
